The picky eater: 6 tips from our dietitian
Offering broccoli for the eighth time, smaller plates and dropping the “one bite” rule. Habits from the school kitchen that work at home.

“He eats nothing at home but everything at school.” We hear this at every monthly meeting. There is no magic, just a few simple habits. Our dietitian Seda Karaca turned them into tips for home.
1. New food is liked on the eighth try
Children may need to see a new taste eight to fifteen times before accepting it. Don’t drop the rejected vegetable; keep offering a small amount.
2. Smaller plates
A full plate is a task. At school we serve a little and give seconds to those who ask.
3. Drop the “one bite” rule
A forced bite makes the food harder next time. Our rule: you don’t have to touch the food, but you stay at the table.
4. Cook together
A child who shells the peas will taste them. Washing, chopping (with a child knife) and cooking together is the best cure.
5. Plan snacks
A biscuit an hour before dinner ruins dinner. Protect the hour before meals.
6. Be the example
Children watch your plate. If you push the salad away, so will they.
