Why we go outside in winter, and a packing list for your child
Bad clothing, not cold, makes children ill. Why we go out every day and seven things to put in the cubby.

We go out to the garden twice a day even in winter, at 10:30 and 15:30. Rain means boots, snow means a snowman. We stay in only for storms and heavy air-pollution warnings.
Why?
Germs spread more easily indoors; fresh air supports immunity. Running and climbing are essential for gross motor development, and children argue less and play longer outside.
Seven things for the cubby
- Waterproof raincoat or overalls
- Rubber boots (one size up, with thick socks)
- Hat and neck warmer (not a scarf)
- Waterproof gloves
- Spare leggings, socks and vest
- A thin fleece
- The child’s name on all of them
Dress in layers
Three thin layers instead of one thick jumper. Wet clothes are changed when we come back in.
